Hospice at Home – What is it?
Hospice at Home is a service provided by the Gibraltar Society for Cancer Relief (The Lady Williams Cancer Support Centre) that allows patients with cancer to be cared for in their own home if that is their wish.
Hospice at Home is similar to the Macmillan and Marie Curie nursing services in the U.K.
Hospice at Home’s aim is to complement existing GHA Primary Care services, providing a flexible service that is responsive to changes in individual patient’s circumstances. It is not, however, an emergency service.
- Care may be provided to prevent admission to hospital or for periods of respite
- Hospice at Home enables patients who wish to remain at home during their lat few days of life to receive nursing care in partnership with the GHA’s community services
- Hospice at Home supports the family or friends of the patient by partnerships and close working with the family in the best interest of all.
- Hospice at Home also provides psychological, social and spiritual support
The service is coordinated by the Hospice at Home coordinator based at The Lady Williams Cancer Support Centre, who works closely with the GHA Palliative care team, G.P.s, District nurses and other Health and Social care professionals.
