We are delighted to announce that our fabulous Hospice Outreach Nurse, Debbie is now officially the team’s newest clinical nurse specialist! In honour of her achievement, we thought this the perfect opportunity to tell you a little more about Debbie’s journey to her latest position and just how she reached it.
Debbie graduated from the University of Dundee with a Bachelor of Science in adult nursing. She moved to Manchester, working as a community nurse and completed her initial training, such as wound care/tissue viability, continence care, driver management and Sage & Time communication skills training.
Whilst there, she also completed her Level 7 Masters post graduate diploma to become a district nurse. This diploma specialised in chronic disease management, caseload profiling, clinical examination skills, leadership and management and palliative care.
During her time in Manchester, Debbie progressed to become the team leader for a busy city centre practice, consisting of 10 nurses and over 50,000 patients. She also completed a nurse prescribing course, qualifying her as a District Nurse Specialist Practitioner.
Debbie moved to Gibraltar to semi-retire, a plan which didn’t quite work out! She worked for the GHA for 3 years on the acute medical ward, completing ILS and ALERTS course training whilst there.
After her contract finished in Gib, Debbie returned to the UK for a short while, where she worked for 2 years as a hospice nurse, looking after end-of-life patients in their homes. This involved working with all sorts of people, with illnesses such as COPD, heart failure, dementia as well as cancer.
Debbie joined Cancer Relief in 2019, completing her European Certificate in Essential Palliative Care to become a clinical nurse specialist. She now uses her impressive experience and skills to continue to provide the best quality care to the patients and families she supports.
Congratulations Debbie, on your impressive achievements, the charity is proud to have you on the team!
